The rock extracted namely “Black Jade” is a melanocratic rock with a dark grey hue, containing dispersed black crystals of centimetric size. It has a granular, phaneritic texture, with fine to medium grains. The constituent minerals generally have anhedral to subhedral grain shapes, some with a prismatic tendency, without lineations, fissures, pores, or cavities. The rock does not exhibit any type of orientation, foliation, schistosity, or apparent tectonic deformation.

It is an intrusive igneous rock (plutonic) mainly composed of non-equidimensional grains of pyroxenes and plagioclases, with a holocrystalline, phaneritic texture, non-equigranular, with medium to coarse grains, and a hypidiomorphic tendency.

The quarry operation results in different types of rock:

  • Dimensional Blocks
  • Semi-blocks (kerbs and paving cubes)
  • Waste Rock (aggregates)

The quarry is equipped with several machines, namely:

  • COFESEG Double Hammer Driller (3)
  • SPYDER MP100 OSM Three Hammer Driller (2)
  • CATERPILLAR 730 Articulated Dumper
  • VOLVO A30 Articulated Dumper
  • CATERPILLAR 336 Hydraulic Excavator
  • CATERPILLAR 349 Hydraulic Excavator
  • HITACHI 350 Hydraulic Excavator

LOCATION

The Black Jade and Black Turtle granite quarry is located in the Huíla Province, in a region further south of the White Chibia quarry and just a few dozen kilometers from the city of Lubango, the provincial capital.

The proximity of the two quarries – Marlin and Geovalor 1 – allows them to share and benefit from the proximity to the processing factory facilities, which are located within the perimeter of the White Chibia granite quarry.

The nearest seaport to the quarry is the Namibe port in Moçâmedes, which is approximately 260 km away.
